Judo Ranking System in 2022 [The good and the bad]

The Judo Ranking System can be hard to understand. Especially if you’re traveling abroad and decided to hit another dojo during your trip. This article can hopefully answer some of your doubts and questions.

First of all, the judo ranking system is split into kyu and dan grades. Every grade has a belt color assigned to it. Kyu grades, also known as mu-dan-sha, are for beginners learning this art. The kyu grades and requirements may vary a bit country by country. The dan grades, also known as black belt grades, are more consistent and are reserved for well versed judokas.

In this article, we will focus on the United States Judo Federation (USJF) ranking system and its requirements. The USJF further divides their ranking by junior (under the age of 16) and senior categories. Only practitioners on the senior category are eligible for black belt grades.

USJF Senior Judo Ranking System

The senior ranking system has 6 different kyus. The ranks are as follows:

  • Sixth Kyu (Rokkyu) wears a white belt. At this stage, you’re a blank “blank slate”. The entire world of Judo lies ahead. You’re not really expected to dominate any techniques.
  • Fifth Kyu (Gokyu) wears a green belt.
  • Fourth Kyu (Yonkyu) wears as blue belt.
  • Third Kyu (Sankyu) wears a brown belt. This is usually the point where you can consider yourself a true Judoka. At this point, you should know enough techniques to handle yourself in a Randori.
  • Second Kyu (Nikyu) wears a brown belt.
  • First Kyu (Ikkyu) wears a brown belt. This is the last step before earning the black belt.

USJF Junior Judo Ranking System

The junio ranking system has 11 different kyus.

Frequently asked questions

Can you wear a belt with a higher rank than your current rank?

You should avoid wearing a belt with a higher rank than your current one. This is disrespectful to others in your dojo. Moreover, it could also pose a risk to your own safety as your opponent might think you’re more experienced than you truly are.

Can you wear a belt with a lower rank than your current one?

Absolutely, even black belt holders can decide to wear a white belt for whatever reason. Most people want to showcase their knowledge and skills, so this is not a common practice.

Can a white belt judoka beat a black belt one?

Yes, ranks don’t decide what judoka will win a combat. I have seen with my own eyes white belt judokas throwing down black belt holders. It’s not imposible, but it’s unlikely. It’s more common to see a green or blue belt judoka losing to an opponent with a lower rank.

Is black the highest and last judo belt?

No, the last judo belt is solid red. Only 10th dan or greater can wear it. However, only 15 people have been promoted to it as of 2022.

Why does the judo ranking system vary so much?

The ranking system depends on the federation or association that your dojo is affiliated with. It tends to be less consistent for the kyu grades. However, it’s more consistent for the dan grades.

How many dans are there in judo?

No one has even been promoted beyond the 10th dan. However, Judo is not strictly limited to 10 dans. This could change over time as the number of contestants continues to grow.

How long does it take become a black belt in Judo?

It usually takes somewhere around 3 to 6 years depending on how committed you are to this art. It personally took me 4 years to earn my black belt during college. I was very invested into this martial art, I joined my college’s Judo team and even earned a scholarship.
