The Best 5 Judo Throws For Beginners [From Newbie to Master]

Judo Beginner Throws

In this guide, I want to cover what I consider to be the fives best judo beginner throws. I picked a variety of throws since it’s highly important to be able to go for different types of throws. You can’t be a one trick pony and only use pulling throws; your opponents will quickly figure you out. As a matter of fact, the more you advance as a Judoka, the less effective that individual throws become over time, you’ll need to use a combination of them. Without further ado, let’s get down to the list.

O-Goshi

The O Goshi is one of the easiest judo hip throws that exists. It was the first throw that I learnt, and it’s still my most lethal weapon.

Osoto Gari

Ouchi Gari

Hane Goshi

Harai Tsurikomi Ashi

Combining throws

As you start to master these throws, you will start building your confidence, and your win rate will take off. However, you will reach a point when you start facing more experienced judokas, and single attacks won’t be enough anymore. You will quickly notice that breaking their balance won’t be an easy task. You will have to start to combining multiple throws to successfully get an ippon. For example, let’s say you go for an O-Goshi first; if your opponent pulls their weight back, as soon as you notice this, you will have to go for a pushing throw instead, such as an Osoto Gari. This is beauty of this sport, you can use your opponents force against them.

Conclusion

There you have it! With these 5 throws you will be unstoppable next time you go to the dojo. If someone escapes them, make sure to transition into another throw. I always get my opponents with the ouchi gari and osoto gari combination.
